เป้าหมายของบทนี้

บทที่ 30-31 เราฝึก Reading Part 5 ซึ่งเป็นการเติมคำในประโยคเดียว บทนี้จะเข้าสู่ Reading Part 6: Text Completion หรือการเติมคำในข้อความ

Part 6 จะให้ข้อความสั้น ๆ เช่น email, memo, notice หรือ announcement แล้วมีช่องว่างหลายช่องในข้อความเดียว

รูปแบบทั่วไป:

To: All Staff
Subject: Office Renovation

The office renovation will begin next Monday. During this time, employees should use the east entrance. ______, the front entrance will be closed for two weeks.

สิ่งที่ต่างจาก Part 5 คือ Part 6 ไม่สามารถดูแค่คำก่อนและหลังช่องว่างเสมอไป คุณต้องอ่านประโยคก่อนหน้าและประโยคถัดไปด้วย

หลังจบบทนี้ คุณควรทำได้ 6 อย่าง:

• เข้าใจโครงสร้าง TOEIC Reading Part 6
• อ่านบริบทก่อนและหลังช่องว่างได้
• เลือก transition words ได้เหมาะสม
• แก้โจทย์ pronoun reference ได้
• ทำ sentence insertion หรือเติมประโยคทั้งประโยคได้
• ทำ Part 6 mini test โดยใช้ context ไม่เดาจากคำเดี่ยว

Part 6 ต่างจาก Part 5 อย่างไร

Part 5:

เติมคำในประโยคเดียว
คำตอบมักมาจาก grammar หรือ vocabulary รอบช่องว่าง

Part 6:

เติมคำในข้อความ
คำตอบอาจมาจากบริบทก่อนหน้าและหลังช่องว่าง

ตัวอย่าง:

The training session was scheduled for Friday. ______, the instructor became ill, so the session has been moved to next week.

ถ้าดูแค่ช่องว่างจะยังไม่พอ ต้องดูความสัมพันธ์:

มีการเปลี่ยนแผนหรือขัดแย้งกับแผนเดิม จึงใช้:

วิธีทำ Part 6 แบบ 5 ขั้น

ใช้ขั้นตอนนี้:

1. อ่าน subject / heading ก่อน
2. อ่านประโยคที่มีช่องว่าง
3. อ่านประโยคก่อนหน้า
4. อ่านประโยคถัดไป
5. เลือกคำตอบที่ทำให้ข้อความไหลลื่นที่สุด

ถ้าเป็นข้อ grammar:

ดูคำรอบช่องว่างแบบ Part 5

ถ้าเป็นข้อ transition:

ดูความสัมพันธ์ของประโยคก่อนและหลัง

ถ้าเป็นข้อ pronoun:

หาว่า pronoun อ้างถึงใครหรืออะไร

ถ้าเป็นข้อ sentence insertion:

ดูว่าประโยคที่เติมต้องเชื่อมกับประโยคก่อนและหลังได้ทั้งคู่

Text Completion: เติมคำในข้อความ

Text completion มีทั้งข้อ grammar และข้อ meaning

ตัวอย่าง grammar:

Dear Mr. Lee,

Thank you for ______ our customer service team. We will respond to your inquiry within one business day.

(A) contact
(B) contacting
(C) contacted
(D) to contact

clue รอบช่องว่าง:

for + V-ing

คำตอบ:

(B) contacting

ตัวอย่าง meaning:

The downtown branch will be closed on Friday for maintenance. Customers may visit our north branch instead. It will be open during regular business hours.

ถ้าถามว่า It หมายถึงอะไร ต้องย้อนกลับไปดู noun ก่อนหน้า:

our north branch

Part 6 จึงต้องอ่านเป็นข้อความ ไม่ใช่ประโยคแยกเดี่ยว

Transition Words: คำเชื่อมความคิด

Transition words เป็นหัวข้อที่ออกบ่อยมากใน Part 6 เพราะข้อสอบต้องการดูว่าคุณเข้าใจความสัมพันธ์ของประโยคหรือไม่

กลุ่มที่ควรรู้:

วิธีเลือก transition

ดูความสัมพันธ์:

ขัดแย้ง -> however
ผลลัพธ์ -> therefore / as a result
เพิ่มข้อมูล -> in addition
ตัวอย่าง -> for example
ทางเลือกแทน -> instead
เหตุการณ์พร้อมกัน -> meanwhile

Pronoun Reference: คำสรรพนามอ้างถึงอะไร

Pronoun reference คือการดูว่า it, they, this, that, these, those อ้างถึงอะไร

ตัวอย่าง:

The new conference chairs arrived yesterday. They will be placed in Room A this afternoon.

They อ้างถึง:

The new conference chairs

ตัวอย่าง:

The marketing team submitted a revised proposal. It includes updated price estimates.

It อ้างถึง:

a revised proposal

วิธีหา:

1. มองหา noun ก่อน pronoun
2. เช็กว่าเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ตรงกันไหม
3. เช็กว่าความหมายเข้ากับประโยคหลังไหม

ตัวอย่าง TOEIC:

The company recently opened two new training centers. These will provide courses for employees and customers.

These เป็นพหูพจน์ จึงอ้างถึง:

two new training centers

ไม่ใช่ company

Sentence Insertion: เติมประโยคทั้งประโยค

ข้อ Part 6 บางข้อไม่ได้ให้เติมคำเดียว แต่ให้เลือกทั้งประโยค

รูปแบบ:

(A) Please bring your receipt with you.
(B) The weather will be warmer tomorrow.
(C) Our company was founded in 1985.
(D) The restaurant serves lunch every day.

วิธีทำ:

1. อ่านประโยคก่อนช่องว่าง
2. อ่านประโยคหลังช่องว่าง
3. เลือกประโยคที่เชื่อมสองด้านได้
4. เช็ก pronoun และ transition ในประโยคที่เลือก

ตัวอย่าง:

We received your request for a refund. ______ Once we receive the item, we will process your refund within five business days.

(A) Please return the product using the enclosed shipping label.
(B) The product is available in three colors.
(C) Our store will open earlier next month.
(D) The new manager joined the company last week.

คำตอบ:

เพราะประโยคหลังพูดว่า Once we receive the item แปลว่าต้องมีการคืนสินค้าเข้ามาก่อน

Part 6 ที่ใช้บริบทก่อนและหลัง

บางข้อประโยคก่อนช่องว่างยังไม่พอ ต้องอ่านประโยคหลังด้วย

ตัวอย่าง:

The training room on the third floor is unavailable this week. ______ The session will still begin at 10 a.m.

(A) Therefore, the session will be held in Room 204.
(B) However, the session was canceled last year.
(C) For example, employees should bring lunch.
